FAQ
What kind of waste cannot go in the bin?
General Skip Bins
- Large tree stumps (may go into bin but beware, it will probably put you over the weight limit)
- Tyres
- Paint
- Asbestos
- Polystyrene
- Bulk sawdust
- Bulk food waste
- Bulk glass
Green Fill
- Root systems with soil attached
- Branches of more than 10cm in diameter
- PLEASE BEWARE OF WEIGHT
What size bins do we have?
We have a variety of skip bin sizes to meet your needs 3m, 4.5m, 6m & 9m. 3m and 4.5m for Hard fill. 6m and 9m for general /green fill.
How long can I have the skip bin for?
Standard hire period is 3/7 days unless other arrangements have been made. Longer hire period is an additional $25/day. Excess weight costs apply at 27 cents per kg. It is also common for a bin to go overweight as you can never gauge what a bin will weigh when at a tipping site. Charges are in alignment with Waste Transfers + Quarries and Waste Management tipping site charges.
What sized skip bin is best for different jobs?
From our experience we have found that the sizes often required for typical jobs are as follows:
- Bathroom renovation - 3 to 4.5 cubic metres
- Kitchen renovation – 4.5 cubic metres
- Moving house (large clean-up) – 6 to 9 cubic metres
- Moving house (small clean-up) - 3 to 4.5 cubic metres
- Excavation project - multiply length x width x depth to get the volume excavated then multiply again by 1.3 to allow for packing inefficiency. Note: Soil tends to weigh around 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre.
- Demolished brickwork or concrete - multiply length x width x depth to get the volume demolished then multiply again by 1.5 to allow for packing inefficiency. Note: Brickwork and concrete tend to weigh around 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre.
If you are in doubt, it is often cheaper to go on the larger side as this limits the risk of needing a second skip.
There are other considerations also such as the size of the area where you will put the skip and the width of the truck relative to your drive way.
Please note: These estimates are a guide only and the customer is responsible for the choice of the most appropriate skip size.
To what level can I fill a skip?
Please avoid hassles and costs by ensuring the skips are never loaded above the rim. It is illegal to transport an overfilled skip and drivers are subject to heavy fines and demerit points if caught doing so. If a skip is overfilled you will be given the option to hire an additional skip, or to remove the excess material. All labour costs incurred by you will be your own responsibility.
If there is nobody on site when the collection occurs, the driver will, at his own discretion attempt to remove the excess material and place it in a pile as close as possible to the skip’s location.
In cases where the excess is not removed and the skip remains for extended periods, the customer may become liable for additional charges including rental, labour costs and additional transport costs if it becomes necessary for us to unload the excess.
What happens if passers-by overload the skip or put prohibited materials in it?
As part of the booking terms and conditions, you as the customer are in possession of the skip and are responsible for what goes in it. Therefore, you will be responsible for any costs arising if anyone puts something in the skip that is not allowed or overloads it.
The same applies if you are agreeing with a neighbour, allowing them to put items in your bin. You are responsible for the weight and suggest costs be shared amongst yourselves, especially in the common case of an Overweight/excess charge that we become aware of, once tipped.
Can I put asbestos in a skip?
Asbestos must not be put in any skip hired from Auckland Skip Bins or its partnership companies.
Asbestos can be found in many materials in houses built up until the late 1980s. If in doubt as to whether or not a material might contain asbestos, please consult an expert before placing it in a skip.
If asbestos is found in a skip prior to removal from a customer’s property, the skip will not be removed until properly dealt with.
If asbestos is found in the skip after it has been tipped either at landfill or at a transfer station, high decontamination costs and possibly very heavy penalties may be imposed. The customer will be responsible for the payment of all costs immediately.
